From Muar to the Modern Kitchen: Chef Sid Murshid Reimagines Malaysian Flavours with Thermomix® TM7

Some Malaysian dishes do more than satisfy a craving. One bite can take you straight back to childhood, a weekend market, a family gathering or the familiar sounds and aromas of a neighbourhood hawker stall.

It is this emotional connection to food that sits at the heart of Thermomix® Malaysia’s Malaysian Flavours Collection, created in collaboration with its ambassador, Chef Sid Murshid.

Launched in conjunction with Bulan Kemerdekaan, the collection brings together a selection of Malaysian-inspired recipes rooted in nostalgia, community and the country's ever-evolving food culture. The collection was unveiled through an immersive culinary experience at the Thermomix® Experience Store in Bangsar, where media and content creators experienced the recipes firsthand.

More Than Recipes, These Are Malaysian Memories

For Chef Sid, the collection is deeply personal.

Growing up in Muar, Johor, Sid's early food memories were shaped by weekend markets, roadside hawker stalls and family outings. Those experiences became the inspiration behind recipes such as Apam Balik and Lamb Satay, two dishes that reflect the familiar flavours and street food culture he grew up around.

The collection also looks beyond childhood nostalgia to the role food plays in bringing Malaysians together.

Ayam Percik and Nasi Ulam draw inspiration from communal dining, festive reunions and Merdeka celebrations. Rich with spices, herbs and the flavours associated with gathering around a shared table, the dishes celebrate food as a means of connection and celebration.

Chef Sid Murshid collaborates with Thermomix Malaysia to celebrate Malaysian flavours through the Malaysian Flavours Collection.

And then there is Teh Tarik Crème Brûlée, a playful transformation of one of Malaysia's most recognisable comfort drinks. Inspired by the everyday ritual of enjoying teh tarik at breakfast, during an afternoon break or at the neighbourhood mamak, the dessert turns those familiar flavours into something distinctly contemporary.

Keeping Malaysian Flavours Familiar, While Moving Them Forward

The collection isn't simply about recreating traditional dishes exactly as they have always been made. Instead, it explores how Malaysian flavours can evolve without losing the memories and identity attached to them.

That idea comes through in the Pandan Coconut Frappe, which brings together two beloved local ingredients in a contemporary drink. It is a fitting representation of Sid's approach to Malaysian cuisine: innovative, but still anchored in the flavours that shaped his culinary journey.

As Sid puts it, the collection is about celebrating the memories behind familiar dishes while allowing Malaysian culinary traditions to continue evolving while staying true to their roots.

Where Malaysian Heritage Meets Smart Cooking

Chef Sid Murshid and Thermomix Malaysia celebrate Malaysia's culinary heritage through the Malaysian Flavours Collection, featuring nostalgic Malaysian recipes and contemporary interpretations created for the Thermomix TM7.

Bringing the collection together is the Thermomix® TM7, Vorwerk's latest all-in-one smart cooking appliance.

During the launch experience, live demonstrations showed how the TM7 can assist with techniques often associated with more intricate Malaysian cooking, including preparing rempah from scratch, steaming, blending and slow-cooking. Its guided cooking experience through Cookidoo® is designed to help home cooks follow recipes step by step with greater consistency and confidence.

The TM7 combines the functions of more than 20 kitchen appliances, including chopping, blending, mixing, kneading, steaming, sautéing and weighing. It features a 10-inch multi-touch display and provides access to more than 100,000 guided recipes through Cookidoo®.

For Malaysian home cooks, the appeal lies not only in convenience but in accessibility: familiar recipes and more elaborate preparations can be approached with guided instructions, while still leaving room for creativity in the kitchen.

A Merdeka Celebration Through Food

Alongside Chef Sid's creations, Thermomix® Malaysia's Research & Development Chef Mandy Kee has developed additional recipes for the Merdeka celebration.

The selection includes Malaysian favourites such as Chicken Curry, Roti Canai, Pandan Muah Chee, Ondeh Ondeh, Nyonya Laksa and Kaya Burnt Cheesecake, further showcasing the range of flavours and dishes that make up Malaysia's diverse culinary landscape.

Together, the recipes offer a reminder that Malaysian cuisine has never been static. It is shaped by generations, communities, celebrations and the countless ways people reinterpret the food they grew up with.

And perhaps that is what makes food such a fitting way to celebrate Merdeka.

Recipes may change. Techniques may evolve. The kitchen may look completely different from the one we grew up in. But the memories attached to a familiar dish remain.

The Malaysian Flavours Collection is now available as part of the Thermomix® TM7 experience through Cookidoo®, giving home cooks the opportunity to explore Malaysian flavours with confidence, creativity and pride.

Because ultimately, Malaysian food is never just about what is on the plate. It is about where we come from, who we share it with and the stories we carry forward.
